Aldara cream is meant only for external application to treat skin conditions of Actinic Keratosis [AK], superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma [sBCC], Genital Warts [GW], or Perianal Warts [PW] in adults. It is not meant for children who are below 12 years in the treatment of GW or PW; and, recommended for individuals above 18 years to treat AK and sBCC, but only those who have a normal immune function.
Before your treatment with Aldara begins, inform the treating doctor/ dermatologist about all the illnesses you have suffered from, especially if you’ve had psoriasis [an inflammatory skin condition which Imiquimod can worsen]; if you are taking any other treatment for AK, sBCC, GW, PW, or some other skin condition; if you have recently undergone a surgery that is still unhealed in the area requiring treatment; if you are suffering from any autoimmune disease [such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or HIV]; if you are hypertensive; or, if you are pregnant, or lactating.
Inform the physician about all the medicines [including OTC and prescription]-nutritional supplements-herbal products you are taking, and if you have any known allergies, particularly to Imiquimod. This will enable the doctor to rule out drugs that don’t work well with Imiquimod. It is recommended that you do not use Aldara until your doctor has told you how much has to be used and how to use it for your specific condition.
Do not let this cream come anywhere near your eyes, nostrils, lips, wounds, or inside the vagina or anus.
Do not apply any bandage or closed dressing to the skin area that is under treatment; only cotton gauze dressing and/or cotton underwear is/are recommended.
Certain kinds of Human Papillomaviruses [HPV] are known to cause GW and PW. To prevent transmission of the HPV infection, condoms can be used, but it is recommended that mating should be avoided while using this cream for GW, for as long as the cream is on the skin, it can weaken condoms or diaphragms.
Those who are taking another treatment for AK, GW, PW, sBCC, or any other skin condition, should not use Aldara [Imiquimod], till their skin has healed from the previous treatment.
Imiquimod is likely to make a person more sensitive to sunlight or strong lights, so those who use it for AK or sBCC, should avoid exposure to the sun or strong lights, and use protective clothing - including a hat, to get full benefit of this cream
Pregnant and lactating women should use this cream only if their doctor advises them to do so.
Use a new sachet for every application.
