Aldara Interactions- Generic Aldara
Brand Name : Aldara
Generic Name : Imiquimod
Like all other medications, Imiquimod in Aldara , also interacts with certain other medicines and conditions.
Aldara cream, which is used to treat Acetinic Keratosis [AK], superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma [sBCC], Genital Warts [GW], or Perianal Warts [PW], cannot be used if the person requiring treatment is allergic to Imiquimod.
Individuals who suffer from psoriasis cannot use Imiquimod cream either, for this can worsen the inflammatory skin condition that psoriasis is known for.
Those who are taking another treatment for AK, sBCC, GW, PW, or any other skin condition, cannot use this cream at the same time, until their therapy with the previous medication has ended.
Patients who do not have a normal immune function, but may be suffering from an autoimmune disorder such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or HIV, or those who are hypertensive, will not be able to take Aldara therapy either, as Imiquimod does not work well with the medications given for such diseases/conditions.
For the same reason, if someone has undertaken a surgery, and is suffering from a chronic graft-versus-host disease [GVHD] – in which case, the transplanted cells recognize the host tissue as ‘foreign’ and attack it – which is also concerned with the body’s immune response, Imiquimod cannot be used.
If someone has undertaken a surgery, and then developed a skin condition in the area where the surgery took place, until the operated area has completely healed, Imiquimod cannot be used.
During pregnancy and lactation, great care has to be taken so that the medicine being taken by the mother does not affect the fetus or child, so such women, or those who are planning to conceive, should use Aldara only if their doctor advises them to do so.
Aldara cream is for external use only – in GW or PW, its’ usage is not recommended for the treatment of urethral, intra-vaginal, cervical, rectal, or intra-anal conditions; neither is it recommended for treating sBCC in the anogenital areas.
Before your treatment with Aldara begins, when you let your treating doctor know about the ailments you’ve suffered from and given the full list of medicines [OTC and prescription] as well as nutritional supplements and herbal products that you are taking, your doctor will be able to give you more information about the drugs Imiquimod interacts with.
